i've planted a tomato plant in a container, and i'm wondering how much to water it? does it just need water when the soil starts to feel dry to the touch or more often than that? i'm in boston, mass. if that makes a difference.

How often to water will depend on the weather, the soil mix, and the size of the plant in relation to the container so you will need to water more as the plant grows and the weather gets hotter. To know if you need to water, dig into the soil with your finger. If it is still moist don't water yet. Your goal is to keep it evenly moist like a wrung out sponge, not sopping wet or saturated. When you water, water thoroughly so it soaks down deep into the soil. Also remember to fertilize regularly with a water soluble fertilizer per the label instructions. Enjoy your tomatoes this summer!
