My Flax leaves turned yellow over the winter. Should I cut them off? Do new leaves sprout off the side or only the top? How do you prune them? They will look like a tree if I cut the yellow leaves off. The new leaves growing on top are nice and red.

Although this evergreen grass-like plant usually does not require pruning, it will after a serious setback from chilly weather. As long as the cold didn?t kill it ? which frequently happens in USDA Zones 7 and lower ? it will spring back to life after you take rather drastic measures: Hold your breath, gather your pruning shears, and cut back the entire plant leaving only four inches of foliage. Within a few weeks, you should see new growth.
