Need somthing to block neighbors view - Knowledgebase Question

flat Rock, Mi

I live in southest Mi. I have a small hill that goes down to the neighbors lot line.( I would guess the slope from the top of the back yard is about 4ft.to the lot line.) So I would need something that would be tall enough to hide the ugly garage. I'm open to most anything but upright arborvities. I loved a Tangerine Crossvine I seen. But think Mi is to cold for it. How high a trelles would I need for anything that would climb? I open to evergreen bushes or trees. I have about a 60ft area to cover.

Plant selection is always a bit of a process of elimination. Determine how much sun the plants will get. Will they be in full sun year around, or will they be shaded by the neighbor's garage? You might want to prop up some type of temporary barrier/stakes/trellis, etc. to see what height you need, since I can't predict from the information you've given. It also wasn't clear if you wanted a hedge row type of screening, or 1 or 2 single larger plants. Holly makes a good evergreen screening plant, singly or as a hedge. I agree that tangerine crossvine wouldn't like your cold winters. It is hardy to zone 6 with average annual minimum lows of minus 10 to 0 F. If you get colder than that, it wouldn't survive. Hope this info helps.
