I have seen a number of gadgets that are supposed to help with efficient seed sowing, including small seeds. I am looking for efficient methods to sow seeds that will reduce time, thinning, and wear and tear on the crops. Do these gadgets really work? Doyou have any other tips that can make seed sowing faster and more efficient, esp. in the outside garden?

Burpee has a small seed planter that works very well. I have used a similar planter and have had good results. You can find Burpee's Seed Sower on page 96 in the 1998 catalog. Burpee has a sower with various seed plates on page 99 for planting largerseed. It saves some bending, but I find that if I use either tool, I still have to do some thinning, though less than before. Burpee also has seed tape for many varieties of small-seeded crops (see pg 92 of the catalog). If you don't find the varieties you want in seed tape form, you can make your own by placing seeds at intervals between a couple of moist paper towels. Then just lay them out in a row and cover them with soil. Hope this helps!
