My beautiful hosta is being bruised by bugs and/or slugs. It is growing and seems to be doing well except the leaves have slits in them. Any suggestions on how to control this problem? Thanks a lot! MK

Hosta foliage can be damaged by weather such as hail or wind, or by late frosts, or by slugs. Slugs are nocturnal and so you may not see them but they do leave little silvery trails. You can control them by hand picking at night (drop them in soapy water) or by using a bait that is formulated with iron phosphate. (This is less dangerous for children and animals than the metaldehyde baits.) Read and follow the label instructions.
