I have 10 iris plants that we just transplanted into some long ceramic mexican pots. They are the old variety, probably about 40 years old, growing from a sideways running large root with small roots like twine coming from it. I think they have 1 big bloom per plant. They were not blooming when we dug them up, so I don't know what color they are, maybe lavender. We were told to cut them back to about a 6 inch fan when we planted them. We mixed sand, humus and top soil and patted them down firmly and watered them. The weather here is very sunny and about 96. How long will they take to bloom? Where we cut them back, the long fan like leaves have browned along the cut line. Is that normal when you cut the leaves? Do you have any other suggestions? Is it enough to just water them once a day?

Teresa,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. We are transitioning to a new Q&A system and your question was unfortunately lost in the transition. I have discovered it now and hope this reply is not too late to be of help.

Everything you are describing is normal. The plants bloom best in spring to early summer depending on the specific variety. Your plants may not bloom well next year after the transplanting, but it may...they are sometimes picky that way.

Water enough to keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy wet. In a container that may be a little more often than if there were planted in the soil. But just how often depends on the container size, amount of sun exposure, temperatures, etc.

Don't cut them back any more. They can be cut back a little in late winter to remove brown topgrowth.

Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
