Although Japanese maples are fairly well suited to container growing, it is difficult to overwinter them successfully in cold climates such as yours. If you keep it in a sheltered location with protection from the wind and also have a way to insulate the roots, such as sinking the container into the ground or heaping mulch around it to provide insulation, it might work. In my experience it is better to consider it an experiment rather than a sure thing.
