entire area receives shade until 3p.m. then 1/2 receives hot, dry sun - remaining 1/2 continues in shade until 5p.m. and then entire area stays in full, hot, dry sun until sundown. Backdrop is ugly backside of house with exposed cable box, electrical box, cable box and lines heat pump/ac unit plus propane gas tank (can bury gas tank)- want to hide the bad and ugly - Other than moving - what suggestions do you purpose? |What a difficult situation! You will need plants that take hot, full sun well but tolerate partial shade and are also iron tough so they can handle that abrupt switch at the hottest part of the day.You might want to consider planting a small tree strategically located to shade that area; this would make your planting options a lot easier! In the meantime, here are some to experiment with: |
Shrubs: Euonymous fortunei, mugho pine, "Grey Owl" juniper, the small summer blooming spireas.
Perennials: purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, ornamental grasses.
Groundcovers: liriope, ajuga, and wooly thyme.
