There are many ways to do this. Usually you would install a sturdy stake at planting time or encircle the plant with a sturdy wire mesh cylinder and tie it to that as it grows. I like to use old nylon stockings or strips of old cotton tee shirt or other stretchy fabric to tie the vines; make a figure eight by making a loop around the stem, cross over and make a loop around the support. That way it has some extra flexibility. Do not tie it up real tight, just direct and support it as it grows. If your plant is already long and floppy, you can mulch around it and under it with clean straw and let it scramble on the ground. The straw helps keep the tomatoes clean. I hope this answers your question. |
