| Hibiscus is in the Malvaceae (mallow) plant family. This includes flowering maple (Abutilon), hollyhock (Alcea), Hibiscus, mallow (Malva), and checkerbloom (Sidalcea). You're probably seeing mallow in gardens everywhere. This is an easy to grow perennial or biennial plant, doing best in full sunshine with regular irrigation. The plants grow 2-4' in height and width, with roundish or heart-shaped leaves and hibiscuslike flowers in white, pink, or lavender pink. If you keep the spent flowers pruned off, this plant will bloom until first frost. The tops die down in the winter, but the roots send up fresh new stems in the late spring. |
