what do i do when i see worms in my patio plants

Unfortunately based on your description I am not sure exactly what you are seeing. If they are ordinary earthworms in the soil, it is not a problem and you do not need to do anything. If they are caterpillars munching the foliage, you can pick them off by hand or spray with a product containing Bt (Dipel is one). Be sure to cacrefully read and follow all of the label instructions. If neither of these seems right, you could take a sample to your county extension and ask them to help you identify it. Once you know exactly what it is, they can help you with how to treat it, if treatment is needed. Good luck with your plants!
