What is dead heading? How and when should it be done on flowers?

Dead heading means to remove the flowers after they fade. This keeps things tidy and also prevents the plant from producing seed so it has more energy for producing more flowers. Many flowers will bloom over a longer period if deadheaded. Just snip off the flower being sure to take the entire flower, not just the petals.
