| I've purchased a Monrovia mandarin honeysuckle. Since I live in an apt, I have to keep it in a container. It hasn't bloomed yet but is very healthy looking. I was wondering if there was any special care needed to keep it healthy in a container vs planting in the ground. |
| Honeysuckle will adapt to growing in a container and will remain healthy as long as you keep it adequately watered (but are careful not to over-water). Lack of blooms may be a result of inadequate sunshine. Place it where it will get 6-8 hours of direct sunshine every day and it should begin to bloom for you in a few weeks. Hold off on fertilizer (too much nitrogen fertilizer will result in lots of lush, green growth, at the expense of flowers). Honeysuckles develop flowers on new stems so pinch the tips of the stems out to encourage lots of new flowering shoots. Aside from lots of sunshine and tip pinching, the only other thing you can do is wait patiently - when your Mandarin honeysuckle blooms, the wait will be worth the effort. Enjoy! |
