The absolute best times (from the plant's point of view) to dig a flower bed and divide the plants is early spring or early fall. The weather is cooler at these times and natural rainfall is abundant, both of which make the transition easier on your plants. However, if you're careful, you can dig and divide your plants now. Choose an overcast day or work late in the afternoon so the unearthed plants won't bake in the hot summer sunshine. Dig the plants, set them on a tarp or damp newspapers in a shady spot and wrap the roots so they won't dry out. After you've dug everything out of the bed, spread a 3-4" layer of organic matter over the top of the bed and dig it in to a depth of 8-10". Then level the bed and dig your planting holes. Best wishes with your garden!
