|I am looking for suggestions...
Need to find a plant for an office (one window) limited light in the state of Iowa. It is a gift for someone that is moving on to another position within our organization (promotion). This person is a master gardener and I am trying to find something nice, perhaps unusual that may have a meaning of best wishes or good luck. A flowering plant would be nice but it does not have to be. Would appreciate any assistance you may be able to offer.
|The plant typically used to symbolize good luck is four leaf clover but it is usually only available around St. Patrick's Day. Corn is sometimes used to symbolize prosperity but that does not grow well on a window sill. The so-called meaning of flowers is often pretty loosely interpreted, but among the lists I found nothing would suit a dim windowsill. So unfortunately I am not able to come up with something that would contain the meaning you have in mind. A possible alternative might be to find an African Violet with a cultivar name including the word Luck, for example: "Lucky Day" or "Lucky Duck" or "Lucky Halo" for instance. These tend to do well in office lighting but a specific name can be difficult to locate. Another option would be to give a "Money Plant" which symbolizes good luck, good fortune, purity and other positive things, and is widely available in malls and florists. It is a bit of an oddity in that it tolerates low light and grows in plain water. Since the recipient is a good gardener, you might consider giving an attractive flower pot or cachepot and perhaps a gift certificate to a favorite nursery or houseplant store in your area. That way they could have the pleasure of selecting their own plant (gardeners love doing this) and also keep a memento of your good wishes on the special day. I hope this helps!|
