I started several marigolds from seed. They seemed to have grown quite well but the flowers are really small compared to some of the ones you see in the stores. Could that be caused by the soil being too rich or am I doing something wrong?

There are so many kinds of marigolds that it's possible those with large flowers that you see elsewhere are the giant or double-flowering kinds and those you planted from seed are the smaller flowering varieties. Giant marigolds can have flowers that are 4" across; others produce flowers barely one and one-half inch across. Marigolds grow best in full sunshine, in average, well-draining soils. Enjoy your flowers!
