| Hardiness refers to this magnolia's ability to adapt to a wide range of soil types, summer heat and winter cold. It blooms slightly later than other magnolias, which means it will produce abundant blooms even if there is an unexpected late frost. Magnolia 'Elizabeth' was named in the late 1970's after Elizabeth van Brunt, a benefactor of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. It was the result of the first cross between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia acuminata. Magnolia 'Elizabeth' can be grown as a tree or large shrub and has a neat and pyramidal habit reaching a height of 30-50'+. The buds are finely tapered and open to a fragrant primrose yellow flower which are produced from a young age on leafless stems. In warmer climates the flowers tend to be a pale yellow, they are produced from late April to early May depending on the spring temperatures. It is generally rated in hardiness zones Zone 5-9. |
