does mothballs keep squirrels from eating my tomatoes? I know chicken wire will probably keep them out, but was wondering about mothballs, or hot pepper...I have dogs, so I have to watch they do not get into anything like mothballs, but I doubt if they would be attracted to that smell. thank you

Mothballs are not recommended for outdoor off-label use, for one thing they are toxic to animals including your dogs. Squirrels can be real pests. You can try to repel them using a hot pepper wax spray on the plants, or using one of the commercially formulated repellents sold at garden centers. Read and follow the label directions being sure to apply and reapply as indicated. Otherwise, as you have realized, fencing can do the job. Sometimes they are thirsty as much as hungry so setting a pan of water out for them (at a distance from the garden) can help. Good luck wiht the tomatoes!
