I have a plum tree that I planted last spring. Should I put out Lime around the base of the tree to help it produce fruit this summer? |
Lime contains calcium and dolimitic lime also contains magnesium, which are both necessary for plant growth. However, lime raises soil pH, which can be harmful in the extreme. Unless you know there's a nutrient deficiency in the soil, you need not fertilize your plum. It's best to let your tree grow and mature at its own rate before it produces that first luscious crop of plums. After it has been bearing a few years, if branch growth is slow (at least 10" per year), it may need a small dose of nitrogen - we can help with recommendations at that time. Enjoy! |
