I've been thinking of planting cannas on the north/west side of my house. Everything I have read says they have to have full sun. This site gets sun from 1:00 PM to dark. Is this O.K. ?

Cannas will thrive in areas of full sun to partial shade so they should do OK in the area you describe. Cannas are popular because they are virtually trouble free, have very tough constitutions, and are virtually pest/disease free. Their soil demands aren't even great - they will grow in average soil (it does need to be well drained). Cannas are also drought tolerant...wow! Who could ask for more from a plant?
