ok, I had to section off part of my back yard from my dog and for him to have a potty area of his own all I had was bare ground. Being a doting dog lover i felt it wasn't fair so I laid sod for him 100 sq. ft. This wasn't to be permanent but I put sod starter seed down first and am watering it 4 times a day 15 min. ea.. I am starting to see small mushrooms. It has been 3 weeks and the lawn looks great. 1. am I watering way too much, and 2. Do you think this will grow ok? looks good so far but the ground wasn' t properly prepared. Thanks.. Dave

Laying sod for your favorite canine is a real act of kindness and I'm not laughing. As a matter of fact, I have a friend who installed a two-foot square piece of sod for his toy poodle. The dog appreciated the effort and the sod didn't look too out of place in his yard. Mowing was a problem, though. He cut it with scissors every week. What's your plan?

As for the mushroom growth; it does indicate overly wet conditions. While newly installed sod needs enough water to help it remain healthy until the roots become established, you may be overdoing it. Try cutting back on the watering. After 3 weeks, the roots should have ventured into the native soil and should be able to find some moisture there. Gradually decrease the watering frequency and the mushrooms should stop emerging.

Best wishes with your new lawn!
