I purchased The Path Hibiscus from the ROSE Garden Center in Marrero, LA. For some reason, when my buds get large enough to where they are not far long from blooming, they turn yellow, then die and fall off. I have been having this problem for a while. I water it once a week. Is that too much or too little? What am I doing wrong? My other Hibiscus seems to do very well. Please help!

Hibiscus buds are very prone to dropping, especially if your plant is under stress from too much or too little water, excessive fertilizer, thrips or other stress factors. Also, some varieties are more prone to bud drop although The Path is not one I have heard of as being prone to drop.

The above cultural problems are the most likely causes. However if you feel they are not applicable I suggest you place an unopened bloom in a ziplock bag and take it to your County Extension Office to see if there are a lot of thrips in it. If so they can recommend an appropriate control product. Neem (azadirachtin) is one suchproduct that may be helpful against thrips.
