| Peat moss is organic material harvested from plants that grew in peat bogs; it is sold in bales and is a fairly expensive source of organic matter if you have a large area to cover. For a new lawn or reworking a lawn you need to start by running some basic soil tests to see how the soil is now and then add amendments based on the test results. Usually you do need to add organic matter, compost is a great material to use and is often sold in bulk by nurseries. Since you would need to be adding a large amount to cover a lawn, bulk is probably the better way to go in terms of cost. I would suggest you work with your local county extension to do the soil tests and develop a lawn care plan.
