|Are Mimosa trees poisonous? I am planning on putting a playground beside a Mimosa tree and I need to know if that is a good idea or not.

|In a quick check I did not find Mimosa (Albizia julibrissin) listed as being a problem in terms of toxicity. I know my daughter played happily in the shade beneath a mimosa tree for many years and enjoyed playing with the seed pods as well -- but we also were careful to teach children not to eat anything outside. I might point out that this tree has some disease issues that make it somewhat problematic, also the self sown seedling trees can be a real nuisance in the landscape in case that would be a concern for you; it is also considered an invasive exotic in some areas and in some areas no longer recommended for planting. You might want to check with your local professional nurseryman and county extension to see if they might have additional recommendations for suitable trees you could use. Enjoy your playground!
