I received a Bird of Paradise for Mother's Day. The leaves look fine but it hasn't bloomed. Do they not bloom until they get larger or am I doing something wrong? Thanks! Mary

Mary,

First of all there are more than one plant that goes by that name. The most common ones are Caesalpinia pulcherrima, also called Pride of Barbados, and a different plant called Strelitzia. I'll guess that you have the second plant and if I am wrong please submit another question to the website so I can try again!

Strelitzia needs some time to bloom. Keep the soil moist but not too wet. Give it full to partial sun and fertilize just lightly in spring. It should settle in and start blooming for you soon.
