Hedera helix or English ivy tends to thrive where it is difficult or impossible to grow healthy lawn and is often planted as a low maintenance ground cover for that reason, so that may be a consideration before you remove it. If you do want it gone, you can dig it out by hand (take as much root as you possible can) then continue digging out and/or cutting off new shoots as they sprout. Eventually you will exhaust the roots. You may also be able to smother it over time with a layer of newspaper topped with a thick layer of organic mulch. Or, you can try to control it with an herbicide containing glyphosate. This is nonselective so do not allow it to contact desirable plants. Carefully read and follow all of the label directions. You may have to do some follow up applications to achieve full control. I hope this helps.
