Pruning Heritage River Birch - Knowledgebase Question

My river birch is quite tall. We are redoing the front walk and would like to take some off the top of the river birch. It is about 10 or 15 ft above our roof line. We have a signle story home.
Does it harm the tree to take some off the top. We would have it done professionally. Thanks

Arlene,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. We are transitioning to a new Q&A system and your question was unfortunately lost in the transition. I have discovered it now and hope this reply is not too late to be of help.

It is generally not a preferred practice but if done well should not cause major harm for the tree, as long as you are not removing too much so as to leave a very large wound. It may however leave the tree somewhat disfigured. I suggest you contact a certified arborist to discuss the specifics regarding your particular tree.

Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
