There is no set rule for watering because it depends on the planting site, the soil, the wind -- and the weather. The soil should be kept evenly moist like a wrung out sponge, not sopping wet and not dry. To know if you need to water, dig into the soil with your finger. If it is still damp, do not water yet. Using a layer of organic mulch several inches deep over the root area will help the soil stay moister longer. When you water, water slowly and deeply to encourage deep rooting. This is better than a daily light sprinkling. After you water, wait a few hours and then dig down to see how far the water went, it can be surprising. Good luck with your new holly.
