Pines are pruned once a year in the spring. The new growth for the entire year begins as little "candles" at the branch tips. When these begin to swell, you can trim each one to limit and control the amount of growth that year. Do not remove the entire candle, but break or snip off some of it. The more you remove, the more compact the growth will be. With a pompom form you will want to keep it very compact and tight, so take most of each candle. This will cause it to grow only a little bit that year and it will also cause it to branch where you have broken the candle. This will make it grow dense, too. Enjoy your pompon tree!
