I NEED to purchase an African Boabab tree. Do you happen to sell any baby trees as young as 6 months old or slightly more mature? If not, do you sell the seeds?

Urgent response requested! I?m plant-sitting for a friend while on vacation and he is very attached to this tree. So much so that he wanted to take it on vacation. When he left he knew exactly how tall it was, how many leaves, etc. etc. His wife (my boss!) convinced him to let me care for it and, to my dismay, it received too much heat and is looking very, sad. It?s still alive, but 7 of the leaves are completely limp and I?m not having any luck reviving those leaves.

Please help quick!! They will be back soon! Do you know where I could get this rare tree?

Desperately yours,

Thank you for asking but Monrovia is a wholesale only nursery and does not sell plants or seeds retail by mail order or by web site -- and Baobab (Adansonia digitata) is not included in Monrovia's plant list in any case. This is a very unusual plant and I doubt you will be able to find an exact replacement, especially on short notice.

I doubt it has received too much heat, this plant is native to the savannas of Africa so it is well acclimated to heat and drought both. Unfortunately, I have never grown one of these as a container plant. It is possible that it may have been overwatered, or it might be beginning to show signs of seasonal change since it is deciduous.

I would strongly suggest you contact the owner and allow him to help you troubleshoot as he will be familiar with its normal growth cycles.

Otherwise you might try contacting some of the botanical gardens near you, Missouri Botanical Garden for instance should be a good resource.

I'm really sorry you are having this problem. I hope it is okay. Good luck!
