Late summer and early fall are excellent seasons for lawn work. First of all you need to determine the proportion of grass to weeds in your lawn and also identify the weeds in your lawn and determine if they are annual or perennial weeds as a first step toward deciding how best to control them. You will also need to run some basic soil tests to determine the pH and fertility levels as well as what basic type of soil you have. Then you will need to analyze the growing conditions in your yard in terms of whether or not they are suited to turf grass. If not, you may need to amend and prepare your soil prior to replanting seed or sod. Or, you may want to consider ground cover plantings instead. Your local county extension should be able to help you with soil testing and soil preparation techniques; they should also be able to tell you which particular lawn grasses are best suited to the growing conditions you have; they should also be able to help you work out an ongoing lawn care program. Here are some links to help you get started in your research. You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly.

Best of luck with your new lawn!
