Which varieties of tomatoes grow best in the desert climate of the Las Vegas valley? I am considering the Early Girl Bush, the Fourth of July, and/or Heatwave. I usually try for two varieties, which would you recommend?

I think you are right on track with 'Heatwave II', it should perform well in your climate. My suggestion for a second variety would probably be 'Sweet Tangerine', it may be a little more forgiving of the heat than the others you mention. There is a very good book out called "Desert Gardening" by George Brookbank you may want to look into. Some very good tips specific to growing in your area are included. Because it is hard on plants to grow in such extreme heat, be sure to treat them to soil that is high in organic matter. If you can make or purchase compost to add to your soil, it will hold more water and nutrients for your plants. It is also a good idea to mulch your tomatoes so the soil will retain moisture.
