The spacing will depend on what you are trying to accomplish for the planting. Ligustrum japonicum 'Variegatum' or variegated privet can grow to ten feet tall and about six feet wide. To have them mature at full size, plant them about six to eight feet apart. For an informal hedge you might plant them closer, about four to five feet apart. For a formally trimmed hedge you might go as close together as three feet, depending on the height you expect it to be. Your local professional nursery staff should be able to help you determine the best spacing for your purpose.
