| Hydrangeas tend to wilt in hot afternoon sunshine (although they generally recover overnight). Moving yours to a shadier area is fine. They will still bloom and grow without problem. When the foliage begins to drop and you place a cylinder around the plants, the leaves will drop into the cylinder and provide some protection against freezing. This hydrangea blooms on new shoots which develop on old wood, so protecting the lower 12-18 inches of stems will ensure your hydrangea has old wood on which to produce new flowering shoots. In the spring, remove the protective mulch and your hydrangea should perform well for you. Enjoy! |
