| I am just starting to garden and I love wildflowers and tulips. On the wild flowers the instruction said to start in the spring after first frost and the the tulips said plant in the fall for spring blooming. But my question is, can these be put in pots like barrels or must be put in the ground? |
| You most certainly can grow wildflowers and tulips in containers. The size of the pots (or barrels) is really a personal choice. Most wildflowers will grow in 6" pots, most bulbs will need deeper pots (12" is a good size). You can use larger containers; these are the minimum your plants will require. Use potting soil in your containers (in the case of half-barrels or even over-sized plastic pots, you can save a little money on potting soil if you half fill the barrel or pot with plastic bags of packing peanuts, empty but sealed gallon milk jugs, etc. before adding potting soil). Plant the tulip bulbs about 3 times as deep as they are wide. After the bulbs are planted, you can sprinkle flower seeds over the soil surface if you'd like. The tulips will emerge first, followed by the annuals or perennials from the seeds you've sown. Enjoy your new garden! |
