our front lawn has turned to weeds.(i fired the lawn service). should we spray a weed and grass killer before having top soil and seed or sod put down? also i do not want to cover seed with straw, too many weed seeds, what should we cover seeds with and for how long? |
Donna, Yes use a product containing glyphosate following the label closely. It will kill whatever you get it on so be carefully. Don't overapply it and don't apply it right before a rain. Wait a week after spraying and them mow the area as closely as you can, rototill the area lightly and wait another week or so. Next lay sod or plant seeds and water it in well. Keep it moist until the grass has a chance to get established well. Contact you local Extension Office as to what products are available locally to cover the seeds. I would just roll the area with a sod roller. Since it was rototilled lightly and the soil is rather loose the rolling will insure good soil to seed contact and better germination. Just remember to not let it dry out during the critical germination period. Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon! |
