This plant (Hibiscus syriacus) is winter hardy in your area so it should need no special care beyond a thick organic mulch applied in late fall. Place it in a flat layer over the root zone and keep it an inch or two away from the trunk/stems of your shrub. If you have not planted it yet, try to do so as soon as possible. It needs full sun all day long and average soil is fine, the location should however be well drained. In late winter or early spring, prune off any winter killed branches. This would also be the time to do any desired pruning for size or shape. It blooms on new wood so do not prune during summer. Enjoy!
