A mutant branch on a plant is referred to as a sport. They are important sources of new clones and are somewhat common. The DNA differs from the parent plant, but it is also possible for the sport to eventually revert back to its primative state. Sometimes the sport remains true and doesn't revert back. In this case, it can be named as a new variety. Hope this answers your question!
