| Hello Experts! 3 years ago when I landscaped our new home, I used young plants mostly to conserve on funds. Now that they are grown or growing, they are crowding each other so I would like to space them better. I need to know if it is better to dig them up in late fall when they are dormant, OR dig them up and move them in the spring before growth begins. Your suggestions would be appreciated. | Either time is good as long as the soil is workable meaning not too wet or frozen. For most evergreens I would wait until late winter/early spring. For those you move in the fall, be sure to water well to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets, then mulch heavily after frost. Take as much of the root ball as you possibly can -- it should be bigger than what you planted was -- and replant immediately at the same depth as they are growing now. Be prepared for some heavy moving -- a tarp or wheelbarrow may come in handy for moving them around the yard. Good luck with the transplanting! |
