We have a large triangular bed under the shade of a large oak that receives some late afternoon sun. We've tried dwarf pittosporum and now indian hawthorne. The

The philodendron would be okay but in a bad winter would be killed. Shade is a tough thing for most plants to handle. I would consider Aucuba and Fatsia if they are not too tall for what you need there. Cast iron plant and shrimp plant are two more ideas.
