Abelia is not on the list of most desireable plants for deer, but if they're hungry enough, they may snack on the leaves. I have a hedgerow of abelia and lots of visiting deer. They ignore the abelia and head straight for the roses and apple trees! Along the way they've stoped to taste euonymus and ceanothus, but never the abelia.
