|Rec'd JDM as gift, A Southern Living selection, but your plant instructions card mutiliated, unreadable. I planted root ball in hole, made trench around root ball, have been watering 2 times daily for 3 days. What do I do next? May I now cover with our sandy soil then add mulch top cover? How often should I fertilize and with what do you recommend. Happy with tree! Many Thanks for your time.|
Yes, go ahead and cover the root ball with soil at the same depth it grew in the nursery previously. Then water it in well and maintain moist, not soggy, soil conditions. Mulching is also helpful. Fertilize in spring and early summer with a standard lawn product that has a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio of nutrients. Apply a cup per inch of trunk diameter evenly throughout a large circular area around the plant extending 1 1/2 times the distance out to the outer branch spread. Water it in well after applying the fertilizer.
Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
