Some friends came back from Hawaii and brought me some coffee bean seeds to plant. Are there any special preparations for preparing or sprouting? The packet instructions are not too clear.

Your beans will produce a nice indoor plant with glossy leaves, but will probably not actually produce coffee beans for you. To plant the seeds, make sure the pulp and outer skin of the bean pod is removed. Then plant the coffee seed in regular potting soil, about 1/2 inch deep. Keep the soil moist at all times. The plant will like bright light, but not direct sunlight, and average household temperatures. You can mist the leaves occasionally. Repot the plant every two years. It may produce flowers after 2 or 3 years. Usually the coffee tree will grow to about four feet in height.
