What can I do to protect my garden from hot Santa Ana winds?

Those Santa Ana winds can really dessicate foliage, especially of tender leaved plants. There's not much you can do to protect your plants, but you can choose shrubs and herbaceous perennials with thick leaves (such as jasmine, daphne, and pieris) that won't be so apt to dry out in those seasonal winds.
