|It is better to underfertilize than overfertilize. Ideally you would run some basic soil tests and see if you need to fertilize, or not. Otherwise, an annual topdressing of good quality compost and/or a general purpose granular fertilizer such as 10-10-10 can be applied in the spring. Read and follow the lable instructions. Then use a layer of organic mulch year round. It should be about three inches thick in a flat layer over the root and should not touch the bark. This will also help feed the soil as it breaks down over time.
