This shrub blooms on new growth of the season. In the early spring, trim it back as needed to remove winter damage. Also thin out a third of the oldest stems each spring by trimming them off at the ground. This will help keep the plant growing vigorously. This plant is naturally a leggy and straggly shape, so you can also selectively remove the wildest branches as needed during the summer. Avoid pruning in the fall however as this may encourage late season growth that will not harden before winter and can contribute to excessive winter damage. Enjoy!
