Shortly after planting my French Lace Weigela, the leaves have started drooping and curling up. Also, there are brown spots on the leaves and some of the leaves have started turning completely brown and will crumble. The plant was planted where it gets plenty of sun, was fertilized after planting and has been well watered. I didn't know if maybe the plant has some type of diease or fungus? |
Although what you describe can be quite alarming, I don't think your new shrub has any disease. It is more likely that the plant is going through some transplant stress and trying to adjust to the growing conditions in your garden. The best thing you can do for your new Weigela is to water it deeply once each week to keep it hydrated. Once the roots establish themselves you'll see new growth. It's a little late in the growing season for your shrub to replace the lost leaves so I'd recommend just keeping it watered on a regular basis and putting up with its puny appearance for the time being. Next spring you can prune away any dead stems and branches to encourage the development of healthy new growth. Enjoy your new plant! |
