Autumn is usually the best time to plant spring bulbs. As a general rule of thumb they should be planted in a hole at least 2 to 3 times deeper than the height of the bulb. I simply dig a hole, drop a handful of bonemeal in the bottom of the hole, set the bulb on top of the bonemeal, then cover with soil.

Don't tie the leaves in a knot once they have finished flowering, or cut them off. The leaves will replenish the bulb enabling it to flower the following year. Let the foliage of bulbs die down naturally. If you don't like the appearance of fading foliage after the flowers have gone, plant them among summer flowering plants so that, when they come through, they hide the foliage of the spring bulbs from sight.
