Help with my Blood Beech! - Knowledgebase Question

I just purchased a Blood Beech from a local nursery and I cannot find any information about it! Someone just told me that she thought they could get up to 80ft (which surprised me) and that they lose their leaves in the spring not fall. It has almost black leaves that remind me of a wavy potato chip. Can you give me any information on it? Other than not knowing anything about it I absolutely love it. I am just concerned that it is too close to my house.
Thank you! Kim Cantrell

Your tree is Fagus sylvatica 'Spaethiana', commonly called Spaeth European Beech or Blood Beech. This tree has a rounded shape and grows 50' tall and 40' wide at maturity. It leafs out later than most other trees - usually late spring. Although the leaves die in the fall, they tend to persist through the winter months, dropping when newly forming leaves push them away. The color of the leaves can be deep-purple to approaching black in spring and early summer, but it may fade slightly as the season progresses.

Best wishes with your new tree!
