I live in New York City and have two potted San Jose Junipers. At what point do I need to prepare them for the cold months ahead and what is the best way to protect them?

These plants are very winter hardy when planted in the ground. In a container however the roots are not well insulated. You would want to insulate them as best you can, possibly by heaping mulch around the container. Do this in late fall. You would also need to continue to water, depending on the weather, to keep the soil from drying out. Any wind protection you can provide them is also a good idea. Good luck!
